While Europe's eye is fixed on mighty things, / The fate of Empires and the fall of Kings, / While quacks of State must each produce his plan, / And even children lisp the Rights of Man; / Amid this mighty fuss let me mention, / The Rights of Woman merit some attention. - ROBERT BURNS

"The Martyr of the Solway"
John Everett Millais 1829-96

The Covenanters were Scottish Presbyterians who resisted the English Episcopalian control of the Church. Many of the covenanters were put to death because of their beliefs. The martyrs, among whom 18 year old Margaret Wilson was one, were “ty’d to palisades fixed in the sand, within the flood mark, and there to stand till the flood overflowed them and drowned them.”
