While Europe's eye is fixed on mighty things, / The fate of Empires and the fall of Kings, / While quacks of State must each produce his plan, / And even children lisp the Rights of Man; / Amid this mighty fuss let me mention, / The Rights of Woman merit some attention. - ROBERT BURNS

"Lady Lilith"
Dante Gabriel Rossetti 1828-82

From Wikipedia.com - Lilith is described in Judaic literature as the first wife of Adam. She is associated with the seduction of men and the murder of children. The depiction of women as powerful and evil temptresses was prevalent in 19th-century painting, particularly among the Pre-Raphaelites. The artist depicts Lilith as an iconic, Amazon-like female with long, flowing hair. Her languid nature is reiterated in the inclusion of the poppy in the lower right corner—the flower of opium-induced slumber.

"Flabellifera"
John William Godward 1861-1922

When I posted the painting on Thursday 11th April, I added a note saying that I hadn't been able to discover the reason for that title. One of my daughers has come to the rescue; the Latin word flabellum means fan and of course the girl in the painting is carrying a fan.

"The Venus of Urbino"
Titian (Tiziano Vecelli or Vecellio)  1488/90-1576

The figure's pose is based on Giorgione's Sleeping Venus (See The Eternal Venus Thursday March 21st) which Titian completed. In this depiction, Titian has domesticated Venus by moving her to an indoor setting in the sumptuous surroundings of a Renaissance palace. Devoid as it is of any classical or allegorical trappings, Venus displays none of the attributes of the goddess she is supposed to represent.

"The Women of Amphissa"
Lawrence Alma-Tadema 1836-1912

In Greek mythology the maenads were female followers of Dionysus (Bacchus in the Roman pantheon), The painting depicts the occasion when they had lost their way and had arrived in Amphissa, a city near Delphi. There they sank down exhausted in the market place and were overpowered by a deep sleep. The women of Amphissa formed a protective ring around them and when they awoke arranged for them to return home unmolested.
