Two Paintings by Francisco Goya 1746-1828
"La Maja Desnuda" - the unclothed maja - was painted some time between 1797 and 1800. Goya later created a second painting of the same subject identically posed "La Maja Vestida" - the clothed maja. The model may have been Maria the 13th Duchess of Alba or possibly Pepita Tudo, the young mistress of the prime minister, the Duke of Alcudia.
The word "maja" describes a stereotypical traditional Spanish woman.
